When I was in graduate school I remember a lot of Chinese students crying in the study lounge about not getting an American offer and needing to return to China. I thought that was kind of weird because while China is a s**thole compared to the United States, I'd assume that at least you get a nice job and house there, live closer to family, and not have to deal with cultural translation problems. Can somebody explain to me in great detail how Chinese graduate students process this? Does "returning to China" have a stigma of failure in your culture/families, and that's the hardest thing to accept beyond any material differences in life? Or is it desire to raise your kids American? Or what??
